Matthew Mazer (Chief Science Officer & Founder)
I never imagined that retiring from my government programming career would lead to one of the most rewarding ventures of my life. It all started in our spare bedroom when my son Julian turned 18. With just $3,000 and a shared lifelong fascination with mycology, we embarked on what would become Liquid Fungi.

As a scientist, I'd always been driven by precision and the pursuit of excellence. When Julian and I noticed that many mushroom enthusiasts were struggling with contaminated cultures and good customer service, we saw an opportunity to apply our rigorous scientific principles and pursuit for perfection to mycology. We wanted to create something that would give both hobby growers and commercial cultivators the highest chance of success, and provide them with the service and guarantee they deserve.
We Are All Family
Julian Mazer Now (Lead Mycologist)
Julian Mazer, who started this journey at 18, has grown into our Lead Mycologist. He masterfully manages our liquid culture and petri dish preparations, ensuring the highest quality standards in substrate preparation. His hands-on expertise and attention to detail have been crucial in maintaining our promise of contamination-free products.
Allison Mazer (Laboratory Manager)
Allison Mazer is the Laboratory Manager, and has brought the organizational expertise we needed to scale our operation, handling everything from customer communications to logistics with remarkable efficiency. You will often find her live on our social media and creating amazing content to help our customers. She is doing everything in her power to make our people happy.
Six years into this journey, what makes me proudest isn't just our growth or our reputation for quality – it's that we've stayed true to our family values while helping countless others succeed in their cultivation plans. Every time I step into our laboratory (quite an upgrade from that spare bedroom!), I'm reminded of how far we've come and excited we are about our trajectory.
We still maintain the same scientific rigor and attention to detail that we started with, but now we're able to share our expertise with a growing community of cultivators. From helping educators and researchers to supporting home growers and commercial operations, every day brings new opportunities to make a difference in the world of mycology.
I never expected my retirement project to evolve into this, but I couldn't be more grateful for the chance to work alongside my family, pursuing our passion for mycology while helping others grow their own mushroom success stories.
