How to Inoculate Large Fruiting Blocks Using Mushroom Grain Spawn

Detailed Instructions For Grain Transfers

Grain spawn is a small block of expanded culture containing a specific species of mushroom. Grain Spawn is typically used to inoculate larger blocks and further expand it's volume, which are used to fruit into mushrooms. It is not typically used to fruit mushrooms by itself. It is used as an intermediary step to fruiting blocks for medium and large scale grow operations. The reason is because the transfer procedure is fast to perform and the mycelium expands much quicker in grain than is does on it's final fruiting substrate. This results in faster incubation times, and ultimately makes bringing mushrooms to the market quicker. In this article, we will provide you with step-by-step instructions to ensure successful transfer grain spawn into large fruiting blocks.

Inoculating large fruiting blocks with mushroom grain spawn is a crucial step in the cultivation process. This method allows for efficient colonization of the substrate, leading to healthy and abundant mushroom growth. In this guide, we will walk you through the process of inoculating large fruiting blocks using mushroom grain spawn in a grain transfer.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary materials:

  • Mushroom grain spawn
  • Large fruiting blocks
  • Clean work area
  • Gloves and mask
  • 70% Alcohol towel
  • Clean Scalpel or scissors

Step 2: Prepare Yourself and the Work Area

Be sure to always wear a mask and latex gloves when working with mushroom culture. Clean your gloves well with alcohol before proceeding. Ensure that your work area is clean and free from any contaminants. Wipe down all surfaces with alcohol wipes or sanitizer to create a sterile environment for the inoculation process. It is best to perform all procedures in a laminar flow hood or still air box.

Step 3: Prepare the Mushroom Grain Spawn

Thoroughly wipe the entire Grain Spawn bag with 70% alcohol. While cleaning the spawn inspect it to ensure there is no contamination present. Contaminated grain spawn should not be used, and should be discarded. You can read more about identifying contamination here. If the grain spawn appears healthy and free from contaminants, proceed to the next step. If there are any signs of contamination, discard the grain spawn and obtain a new batch. Cut open the top of the Grain Spawn bag.

Step 4: Prepare the Fruiting Blocks

Take your large fruiting blocks and ensure they are clean and free from any debris. Unroll the top of the bag if needed, and clean the top 6 inches well with 70% alcohol. You do not need to clean the whole bag, only the portion you will be cutting and inoculating. Once clean cut open the top of the bag as close to the seal as possible. Be sure to avoid moving your hands over the open bag to avoid contamination.

Step 5: Inoculate the Fruiting Blocks

Carefully open the fruiting block. Pour grain spawn from the spawn bag into the fruiting block. Hold the bag at an angle trying to avoid putting your hands directly over the fruiting block, we wouldn't want anything else to get in there. Seal the Large Mushroom Grow Bag using an impulse sealer or continuous/constant heat sealer. Be sure to check the viability of the seals while still in the flow hood. We have found contamination can often be traced back to bad seals.

Step 6: Incubation

Place the inoculated fruiting blocks into an incubation area that is ventilated. They will require oxygen during growth. Store the blocks in a warm and dark location, maintaining a consistent temperature.

Step 7: Fruiting Your Mushroom Blocks

Once the fruiting blocks are fully colonized, they are ready for fruitification. Follow the specific instructions for the mushroom variety you are growing to initiate the fruiting process. Provide the necessary conditions such as light, temperature, and humidity to encourage mushroom formation. Be sure to provide plenty of fresh air exchange constantly throughout the day and night.

Step 9: Harvest and Enjoy

When the mushrooms have reached their desired size, carefully harvest them by gently twisting and pulling them from the fruiting blocks. Enjoy the fruits of your labor by incorporating them into your favorite recipes or sharing them with others.

By following these steps, you can successfully inoculate large fruiting blocks using mushroom grain spawn in a grain transfer. Remember to maintain a clean and sterile environment throughout the process to minimize the risk of contamination and maximize your mushroom yield.
