Needs Cold

This species requires colder temperatures to fruit.

Slower Incubating

This species takes longer than average to incubate.

Intermediate

This species requires an intermediate grower level and general understanding of mushrooms.

A cousin of the slimy Nameko (Pholiota nameko) this wonderful clustering, wood loving mushroom forms dense clusters of beautiful, dark orange gilled mushrooms with a slightly shaggy cap, without the slime layer Namekos have. Since they prefer cooler temperatures these mushrooms typically take 2-3 weeks to mature once they start to fruit from baby primordia. An easy mushroom to grow, it can fruit two to three times several weeks apart. The entire mushroom is edible with the exception of the very bottom of the cluster where it attaches, which is a little tough. Pick these young for the most tender texture before they stop growing.

Easily grow your own Chestnut Mushrooms for years to come. Chestnut Mushroom Plug Spawn is wood dowels inoculated with the Chestnut Mushroom species mycelium, and used to grow mushroom fruiting bodies on freshly cut logs or stumps. You will specifically need hardwood logs such as Alder, Ash, Birch, Bitternut, Cherry, Chestnut, Hophornbeam, Ironwood, Maple, Oak, Pecan, Sweet gum, Sycamore, Tulip poplar, Walnut, Willow. Chestnut Mushrooms do not grow on conifers.

Simply drill 5/16" holes 1" deep to hammer the Chestnut Mushroom plugs into. The holes should be drilled right before plugging them, and spaced about 4" apart. Logs should be roughly 6 inches in diameter and four feet long. They need to be freshly cut, or at least cut within the past 20 days. Avoid using logs with missing or split bark, try to find unpenetrated logs, except on the sides they were cut.

Chestnut Mushroom Plug spawn can also be used to grow mushrooms on live trees, but should only be done strategically down branch where pruning is planned later. Our Chestnut Mushroom plug spawn is made from hardwood fluted or spiral dowels.
