The blue oyster mushroom is one of the most common of the oyster mushrooms used in cuisine world wide. Young specimens will be blueish color on their caps, then changing color to grey tones upon maturing. Not only is the blue oyster mushroom delicious, but it's one of the easier varieties of oyster mushrooms to grow. This mushrooms grows on a wide range of substrates including straw (wheat, rye, oat, rice, and barley straw), corn, coffee grounds, banana waste, most hardwoods and hardwood by-products like sawdust and paper, compost and much more. This mushroom truly thrives throughout temperate regions of the world. Blue oyster mushrooms prefer colder temperatures, in comparison to other oyster mushrooms. This mushroom loves low temperature drops and even does best when morning lows are around the 40’s and 50’s. Blue Oyster mushrooms are naturally high in lovastatin, a drug approved by the FDA for lowering "bad" cholesterol and raising "good" cholesterol. Higher concentrations of lovastatin are in the caps then the stems, more concentrated on the mature gills, and especially in the spores.

Easily grow your own Blue Oyster Mushrooms for years to come. Blue Oyster Mushroom Plug Spawn is wood dowels inoculated with the Blue Oyster Mushroom species mycelium, and used to grow mushroom fruiting bodies on freshly cut logs or stumps. You will specifically need hardwood logs such as Alder, Ash, Birch, Bitternut, Cherry, Chestnut, Hophornbeam, Ironwood, Maple, Oak, Pecan, Sweet gum, Sycamore, Tulip poplar, Walnut, Willow. Blue Oyster Mushrooms do not grow on conifers.

Simply drill 5/16" holes 1" deep to hammer the Blue Oyster Mushroom plugs into. The holes should be drilled right before plugging them, and spaced about 4" apart. Logs should be roughly 6 inches in diameter and four feet long. They need to be freshly cut, or at least cut within the past 20 days. Avoid using logs with missing or split bark, try to find unpenetrated logs, except on the sides they were cut.

Blue Oyster Mushroom Plug spawn can also be used to grow mushrooms on live trees, but should only be done strategically down branch where pruning is planned later. Our Blue Oyster Mushroom plug spawn is made from hardwood fluted or spiral dowels.
