📚 Mushroom History

The cultivation history of A. bisporus began in 17th century France. In 1650, melon farmers near Paris discovered these mushrooms growing on their compost piles. The first deliberate cultivation occurred in the caves under Paris, leading to the term "champignon de Paris." The white strain we know today was discovered as a mutation in 1926 by Pennsylvania farmer Lewis Downing. Portobellos, simply mature buttons, gained popularity in the 1980s through a brilliant marketing campaign that transformed what was once considered waste into a premium product.
